The proposal reimagines the former aircraft hangar as a layered event architecture — a multi-dimensional infrastructure embedded within the raw industrial shell. Across approximately 1,600 sqm of flexible event space, the concept establishes a powerful spatial framework that accommodates large-scale gatherings while allowing for intimate and highly curated moments.

Rather than concealing the building’s history, Veech x Veech deliberately preserves its scale, structure and patina. The existing hangar aesthetic becomes the spatial counterpoint to the refined, iconic design language of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This dialogue between industrial robustness and automotive precision defines the architectural narrative.

Within this envelope, a vertically articulated interior landscape unfolds. Inserted platforms, galleries and transparent volumes create a multi-level environment that integrates conference and hospitality spaces, educational facilities and exclusive VIP areas into one coherent system. The spatial layering allows simultaneous programming while maintaining clarity, orientation and experiential quality.

Dynamic media installations are strategically embedded throughout the architecture. Large-scale digital surfaces, immersive projection zones and responsive lighting concepts transform the hangar into a living stage. Content can be adapted in real time — highlighting keynote moments, product presentations or brand storytelling — and turning the entire 1,600 sqm into an atmospheric communication platform.

The result is more than an event venue: it is an immersive brand environment where architecture, media and movement converge — creating a memorable, emotionally charged experience that extends far beyond the event itself.

Primarily used as a meeting room for the Board of Directors of Austria’s largest media provider, ORF’s conference space – unchanged for several decades – has undergone thorough transformation into a 21st-century multi-faceted media center that a leading national network can proudly identify with.

Choreographed Efficiency

Augmented functionality: Besides the 260-sqm, state of the art conference room, the 600-sqm facility comprises two lounge spaces, a technical gallery, and catering area. Strict requirements posed by the specifics of its use are addressed through an intelligent spatial organisation that both facilitates the workflow and maximises its efficiency.

The new layout incorporates two separate lounges for press and for the Board members, each connected to the conference room via its own entrance. An extension to the media lounge is fit out for press conferences where journalists are briefed on the Board’s deliberations.

The project dramatically augments the functionality of the conference space. Originally, it has been exclusively hosting the Board meetings, whereas its new, expanded capacities are suited for a variety of internal meetings, conferences, and special events. As a result, the space that had been previously used for only several days a year has become the heart of the company and its pièce de resistance.

Functional aesthetic: On a relatively compact footprint, the conference room distills VxV’s 25-year experience as media architects who have collaborated with the likes of Al Jazeera, Red Bull Media House, and RGE Media Group. Its aerodynamic forms with painstakingly crafted detailing radiate a distinctly futuristic feel, and yet the entire project is a vivid proof that form has never been a priority for VxV. On the contrary, form is the outcome of their determination to merge architecture and media in an all-embracing, economically feasible, bespoke solution to the project’s diverse requirements.

Unlike the original, U-shaped design, the new elliptical table provides an optimal geometry for the Board’s 42 members to see each other at all times. The elliptical shape occupies the least possible space within the room, while comfortably sitting all of the participants, and enhances peripheral vision to facilitate communication between them. What’s more, by removing the corners, the design team secures an equal, non-hierarchic place for each participant.

The radial pattern of the custom acoustic textile ceiling visually enhances the perspective depth – the space feels more dynamic as a result. The ceiling’s sculptural, three-dimensional shape derives from three built-in video projectors and the centrally positioned, LED-based ambient light feature, while the raised and carpeted central part of the conference table additionally improves the acoustics.

With uninterrupted focus being crucial for the Board meetings, seamlessly integrated equipment serves the double purpose of removing all visual distractions and streamlining the workflow. A combination of pre-programmed, task-specific lighting setups; motorised block-out shades and strategically placed retractable projection screens, as well as the hidden presentation plinths that pull out of the tabletop at the push of a button sets the room in the required functional mode within seconds – and without the conference participants needing to turn or move to other parts of the room.

Engineered Experience

VxV define their work as creating an interface between the architectural space, the technology, the workflow and the human senses. Applied to their projects, this results in controlled environments that celebrate sensory comfort. Thus, in the ORF project, custom lighting scenarios, the positioning of light fixtures and accent lights form a powerful toolkit that helps maintain energy and concentration levels for highly demanding sessions that can last up to 8 hours. Fine-tuned balance of matte and glossy surfaces; meticulously selected materials with specific tactile and acoustic properties contribute to the positive experience of the space.

Even the fact that the ceiling height was significantly reduced due to the integrated equipment has had a positive effect. The change of proportions has shifted the focus towards the band of panoramic windows offering a 270° view of Vienna. This enhanced horizontal accentuation strengthens the sense of inclusion within a circle of collaborators, whereas the openness of the space towards the exterior reconnects them to the larger context. Rather than an isolated spaceship, the conference room feels like a cockpit of an aircraft, while the notion of augmented reality takes on a new, human-scale dimension.

Following the design of Al Jazeera Media Network’s newsroom studio in London’s landmark ‘Shard’ building, VXV were commissioned to create an extension to the network’s English-language broadcast facility in Doha. The new broadcast studio is situated at the core of the site, designed from the inside out to create 360º panoramas through the exterior walls. The development contains 1,650m² of broadcast studio space and support areas. Around 7,450m² of landscaped public space will provide a central feature within the facility when completed in the near future.

An undulating canopy, precisely contoured to shade the studio’s south-facing glass façade, cantilevers from a 36m lateral structural support. The light exposure is regulated by polarization filter panels integrated into the façade, and balanced inside the studio by digital controllers synchronised with the cameras. The natural light changes the character of the broadcast studio throughout the day and visually connects the studio to the landscape outside.

Synergies between the architecture, broadcast media and choreographed lighting add flexibility and versatility to the production workflow and simultaneous transmission of content. Synergies between the ambient light and the integrated LED lighting technologies enhance the effects created by the imaging technologies, immersive graphics and Augmented Reality content broadcast to viewers. Producing and broadcasting multiple programmes from a single studio requires a responsive environment that can easily reconfigure individual sets to create an array of distinct programme identities. ‘The studio blends real environments and digital media together in ways that create new forms of interaction and communication,’ Stuart Veech explains. ‘Synergies between the architecture and workflow generate unique content that traditional facilities can’t provide. They create new forms of newsgathering, make production more flexible and generate content that amplifies the messages being broadcast.’

Custom-made objects designed for the broadcast studios include a sweeping seat and corresponding table that can be filmed from all angles. The curvilinear shapes characterising the furniture also structure the floors, walls and lighting designs to make the studio’s overall composition more dynamic. ‘We developed the designs in response to the Al Jazeera Media Network logo,’ explains Mascha Veech-Kosmatschof. ’They reflect the curves and asymmetry of the calligraphy in the logo, and add a subtle layer of branding to the furniture design.’

The choice of smooth materials, such as Corian and tempered glass, contrasts with the furniture’s sharp angles and soft fabrics to heighten the haptic sensations appearing on screen. LED lighting arrays and digitally-controlled video cubes integrated into the ceiling are interspersed with custom-made acoustic panels that mirror the curving shapes in the studio beneath them. As the architecture suffuses the sets with shadows and light, their surfaces acquire textures that boost their tactile appeal.

The Network Studio Building provides a compelling new vision for how architecture, studio design, broadcast media and digital media can relate television production to the landscapes around them. By controlling a diverse range of design requirements, VXV introduced a new level of transparency to broadcast environments. At a time when broadcast networks are looking for new ways to integrate virtual content into real world studios, VXV are creating visionary designs for an increasingly adaptable industry.

VXV were initially approached by the client for a strategic feasibility study to examine the economic viability of the architectural conversion. The ambitious cross-media workflow, innovative media environment for both workspace and on-air areas embraces the flexibility of rapidly changing media industry. This project highlights VXV´s broad expertise mediating between both architectural and broadcast media environments to create cutting-edge solutions.

Real – Virtual Hybrid Environment

Converting an existing industrial warehouse into a 21st-century media building posed a significant challenge to the design team. The solution was to central atrium providing a shared vertical public space by merging the augmented broadcast, office, conference, and atrium areas into one continuous fluid landscape while stacking all of the media technology spaces are stacked vertically to increase efficiency and interconnectivity.

The result is a multi-use plug and play media landscape providing a diverse mix of semi-closed studios and open space areas for enabling a multitude of new program formats. 400 permanent and a multitude of flexible shared workplaces dispersed over four levels provide the necessary functional and logistic synergies in the production workflow.

After the initial feasibility study, VXV was contracted to develop a comprehensive architectural package for shell & core, interior design, and broadcast studio design.

Broadcasting Vienna: Wien Museum Neu – Competition Entry: Veech x Veech Architects + Architect David Pašek

This vision is reflected in the architecture of our competition entry: The core of the design is the “Vienna space”, a vertical glass rectangle that envelops the existing building by Oswald Haerdtl, creating a spatial interface that enlarges the museum and links it with new functions while at the same time extending the urban space.

Besides providing an expansive, flexible and autonomous space for events, encounters, exhibitions and future forms of innovative content, the shell and volume of this rectangle also serve as a media interface for announcements, stagings and visualizations – communication between the museum and the city in the broadest sense of the word. Wien Museum becomes a live broadcasting channel.

The permanent exhibition and the historical collection are organized and presented in a component of the existing structure below ground level. Karlsplatz has been topographically altered so that the main entrance of Wien Museum is now situated one level lower, thus opening up a spectrum of new possibilities for the utilization of the public space in front of it as both an amphitheater and a stage. The new uppermost level created by the glass envelope crowns the existing building with a multi-purpose seminar and conference area.

The design of the one-story house responds to both the rhomboid shape of the building site and the south-facing, lakeside setting. Since the regulations of the summer recreation resort restricted the size of buildable enclosed area to 160sqm, Veech x Veech maximized the usable living spaces of the house by organizing open-plan, interior living areas around the patio in the inner courtyard.

Separated from the interior by fully-glazed sliding doors, the partially-roofed patio acts as an extension of the interior spaces and enjoys panoramic views toward the lake while being protected against the windy conditions typical for the region. At the same time, the scheme foresees a maximum of privacy, being predominantly closed on the outside.

The two small, children’s bedrooms face the front garden on the north-eastern side of the building and do not have direct access to the outside. The building incorporates sustainable solutions such as geothermal water, a reversible heat pump for heating and cooling, and a home automation system. Triple glazing, external sun shading, and a cantilevered projecting roof reduce heat gain at the south-facing facades.

Veech x Veech’s design for a passive-house daycare facility was conceived as a ternary structure that was compatible with the low-rise buildings of the neighbourhood while adding a vibrant touch of modernism that also served as a visual symbol for children.

The design provided for a maximum amount of daylight and a clearly defined structure for straightforward orientation. Three tubular forms housed the group spaces and offered direct access to outdoor terraces and the garden playground.

Their pixel-like, multi-coloured glass facades augmented the strict geometry of the structure and responded to the children’s world of kaleidoscope fascination and colour intensity.

The connecting spaces, which provided areas for central functions such as creative activities and meals, connected the two levels with garden-facing, double-height glass atriums that enabled spatially stimulating sightlines.

The functional programmatic layout and formal structure of the building follows a centrifugal spiralling principle wrapped around a central open atrium, allowing light penetration into the building’s core. The design responds in a unique fashion to its setting surrounded by a tall, dense, wooded area, with the exterior envelope reflecting the structural pattern of a tree trunk.

Since the enclosed site does not offer any distant surrounding vistas, the design team focused on compensating for this disadvantage on multiple levels by providing a rich spectrum of atmospheric qualities and internal and vertical, external views framing the setting in relation to the sky.

The open-plan living area on the ground level incorporates both a representational and more intimate spaces, with cinematically elaborated, spectacular diagonal views across the entire building.

The generous indoor swimming pool and recreational areas in the semi-basement open onto a semi-enclosed, outside terrace. More intimate spaces are aligned along the spiralling path at the perimeter of the building in accordance with the path of the sun, leading to the cantilevered, fully-glazed master bedroom on the third level. Each level is shaped to create a variety of outside terraces with different functions and atmospheric qualities.

The team’s approach was to create a modern, lightweight system that responded to the surrounding historic architecture, producing an organically shaped design reminiscent of the human spine, which led to the name “Rückgrat-Pavillon” (Spine Pavilion). A steel-framed tube provided the framework for a transparent, pneumatic membrane, which included sophisticated lighting effects, allowing the pavilion to change colour and creating a series of different atmospheres to suit each performance.

All the services were integrated into the floor to enable the design’s transparency and deliver views to the surrounding city. A key part of the design task was to facilitate easy and cost-effective transportation and quick installation.

This ambitious proposal focused around the Vienna Künstlerhaus, a traditional cultural centre in a historic building on Karlsplatz – an intersection for the city’s main public transport and traffic routes and the location for many of the capital’s cultural and educational institutions.

The building houses a contemporary exhibition programme, an experimental theatre and an art house cinema, and the challenge was to create better connections between these diverse elements through an architectural intervention, taking into consideration how the next generation of digital users would interact with culture in the future.

Following numerous failed attempts over many decades to update this 19th-century institution, Veech partnered with the media and broadcast expert Franz Grabner to initiate an extensive feasibility study, and delivered a strategy for catapulting the Vienna Künstlerhaus into the 21st century.

It was conceived as an “urban public living room”, a platform operating at the convergence between art, culture, new media, broadcasting, education and business.

The team proposed to turn the institution into a new cultural media centre suitable for the rapidly changing demands of the 21st century by creating a programmable building. The main feature was a hydraulically-supported, moveable floor in a new cuboid, glazed atrium: a “mobile lounge” that would flexibly extend the volume of the existing space as and when an exhibition or event demanded by moving up and down like an elevator that could dock at each floor.

The design included a horizontal video surface on the bottom of the box, onto which digital content could be screened that mirrored the respective current use of the space. Introducing a new media centre within the 2500sqm underground levels would allow this content to be created and broadcast from the site globally, enabling 24-hour digital arts programming to take place and thereby increasing the visibility of the institution but also engaging with younger audiences and signalling a new chapter for the organisation.

The core idea was to create a unique setting for an artist studio and sculpture garden positioned on a hillside with breath-taking views to the valley below. This meant maximising the view from the studio and gallery space while dealing with the significant challenges presented by the steep, south-facing site. Veech x Veech’s solution was to create a terraced landscape with strategically positioned sculptures in each zone.

The linear building is designed to frame the dramatic perspectives through full-height glazing. The studio also includes a workshop for welding on the ground floor and living space above on the second floor.

One of the challenges was to ensure complete control of internal climatic conditions in both summer and winter in this south-facing building. This was achieved through a combination of measures, including light-diffusing glazing elements with capillary inlays, natural cross-ventilation of all areas, sun protection of the lower gallery level by means of a cantilevered upper floor – which also provides a shaded outdoor area below – and high-quality thermal insulation at the southwest façade.

Given that the headquarters for Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries had to function not only as an office but additionally as the public face of the organisation, the foyer had to work practically yet also translate the brand into a physical space that was open to the public.

Working with the existing footprint, the foyer was opened up by creating a dramatic 6.6m-high glass atrium, enabling greater permeability between inside and outside and therefore signalling a much more open dialogue with the company’s audience. A custom-designed Corian reception desk incorporates complex functional requirements as well as animated LED lighting that is synchronised with the lighting of the cylindrical entrance atrium.

The scheme was nominated for a prestigious German Prize for Lighting Design in 2014, in recognition of Veech x Veech’s innovative custom design solution integrating advanced lighting technologies.

Veech x Veech’s winning design was for a mobile pavilion that could readily travel to multiple locations to launch BMW’s 1 series, being easy to transport and assemble. The brief was for three separate spaces to host events, catering and a garage. The design team investigated this suggestion and proposed one combined space.

The dramatic building was to be raised on a giant scissor jack that took this pavilion from flat-pack to completed structure within hours. The central element of the design was a hydraulic car lift within its core, which would allow cars to be brought down from the pavilion’s interior to the track for test driving. The aerodynamic form, which would give impressive views of the race track above which it hovered, was designed as an aluminium frame covered in a translucent, waterproof textile. Access would be provided by a ramp, leaving space underneath to accommodate a large number of visitors. The interior was to be zoned into different areas to host an exhibition as well as for entertaining.

Allianz felt that the nature of its business meant there were few opportunities to engage with its audience, owing to its not producing a tangible product.

Its brief to Veech x Veech was to create a concept for a building that would be a place to engage with the brand and communicate its values in an educative but playful manner to a young urban audience. The building needed to be adaptable to the parameters of the respective urban sites while retaining its visual recognisability and architectural identity.

Veech x Veech’s solution was to create a building within a building that promoted a different way for people to interact with each other. An organically shaped structure floats inside a rigid, orthogonal glass envelope, meaning that there is a covered, public plaza and park – open 24 hours – that connects to the city.

Inside the free-form “cocoon” are interactive exhibition areas that explain the role insurance plays in daily life and connect with younger audiences through games, temporary exhibitions and lounge areas. The architectural strategy meant that the building would become part of the company’s corporate brand, with the building-within-a-building concept being adaptable to any site worldwide.

The ORF needed a statement building to act both as branding and as a live broadcast hub for the channel’s coverage of the four-week sporting event. Located adjacent to the historic Burgtheater and opposite the landmark City Hall in Vienna’s centre, Veech x Veech’s response to the site – chosen strategically to offer an on-air backdrop of some of the city’s landmark architecture – was a 17.5m-tall Media Tower that incorporated a 60sqm HDTV studio, offices and technical spaces, as well as three LED video screens that wrapped around the structure to show live broadcasts.

The office’s design for a modular tower was clad in Alucobond and provided a contemporary and dramatic contrast to the surrounding historic buildings. The site’s complex demands required the structure to be positioned on tram lines to enable the best position looking out over the plaza, meaning that the team not only had to create a powerful design, but also had to plan for complicated logistics to enable swift five-day construction. The building transformed the area into a public meeting point throughout a live media event.
